UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopts resolution condemning Russia's annexation of Ukrainian regions
Resolution urges all states, international organizations not to recognize any alteration by Russia of status of 4 regions
UNITED NATIONS
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution Wednesday that condemns Russia's illegal annexation of Ukrainian regions with 143 states voting in favor.
The vote at the 193-member General Assembly came after the world body convened an emergency session Monday to discuss Moscow-backed "illegal" referendums to annex parts of eastern Ukraine -- Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson -- in violation of international law.
Five countries including Russia, Venezuela, North Korea, Belarus and Syria voted against the resolution, while 33 abstained, among them were China and India.
The General Assembly resolution urges all states and international organizations not to recognize any alteration of Russia of the four regions in eastern Ukraine and demands that Russia immediately and unconditionally reverse its decisions.
