ISTANBUL

Two goals by Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid a 2-1 victory Wednesday against Shakhtar Donetsk in a UEFA Champions League Group D match.

The French star opened the scoring in the 14th minute. But Fernando dos Santos Pedro leveled in the 39th minute at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

But Benzema managed to score the winning goal in the 61st minute.

Los Blancos (the whites) became the first team ever to reach 1,000 goals in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League.
