Dow, S&P 500 open lower, Nasdaq up with tech firms
AMC Entertainment, Coinbase Global climb more than 3% apiece
ANKARA
Major indices on the New York Stock Exchange opened lower Thursday but the Nasdaq was up with gains in technology stocks.
The Dow was down 221 points, or 0.7%, to 31,268 points at 9.41 a.m. EDT (1341GMT). The S&P 500 fell 12 points, or 0.31%, to 3,911.
The Nasdaq, on the other hand, rose 27 points, or 0.24%, to 11,444.
Movie theater chain AMC Entertainment and cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase Global saw their stock prices climb more than 3% apiece.
Despite the gains in tech stocks, the VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was still up 4.5% to 32.36.
While the dollar index was down 0.8% to 103.03, the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 2.6% to 2.808%.
Precious metals were on the rise with the price of gold adding 1.2% to $1,839 and silver rising 2.2% to $21.87.
Crude prices were up down. Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading at $108.75 for a 0.4% loss, while the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $106.31 -- a 0.7% decrease.
