Turkey on Monday decried the attack targeting the statue of country's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in the US.

On the recent attack on Ataturk's statue in front of Turkey's Washington Embassy residence, foreign ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said that such "ugly acts cannot overshadow" the country's glorious history and the memories of the great leader Ataturk.

"In order to launch an investigation into the perpetrators of this atrocious action, our Washington Embassy took necessary initiatives with the US authorities," Aksoy said in a written statement.

The attack targeting the bronze statue of Ataturk took place in the US capital on June 25.
