Manchester City unveils Aguero’s statue to honor historic Premier League title
Ex-Man City star's statue unveiled on 10th anniversary of 2012 English Premier League title as Argentine legend scored crucial winning goal
Manchester City on Friday revealed the statue of their Argentine legend Sergio Aguero to celebrate the club's historic 2012 English Premier League championship that they waited for at least four decades.
"Manchester City Football Club are today delighted to unveil a permanent statue of Club legend Sergio Aguero at Etihad Stadium on the tenth anniversary of the Club's first Premier League title and the iconic '93:20' moment," the club said in a statement.
The 'iconic '93:20' moment' is referring to Aguero's crucial winning goal against Queens Park Rangers in the injury time that brought the Premier League title to Manchester City.
Thanks to Aguero's goal in the 93rd minute, Manchester City beat Queens Park Rangers (QPR) 3-2 on the final day of the 2011-12 Premier League season at the Etihad Stadium on May 13, 2012, and it was Manchester City's first Premier League title since 1968.
Following the win at home, Manchester City beat out archrivals Manchester United on goal difference as the Etihad Stadium went crazy for winning their long-awaited league title.
The new statue of Aguero depicts his goal celebration moment at the QPR match.
"Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving," Aguero said.
"I am very grateful to the Club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special," the 33-year-old added.
One of the notable football players, Aguero was a Manchester City forward in 2011-2021 to score a record of 260 goals in 390 matches.
The former Atletico Madrid and Manchester City star moved to Barcelona in 2021, but Aguero had to retire from football this season for a heart condition.
During his 10-year-spell in Manchester City, ex-Argentina forward Aguero helped the club win the Premier League title for five times in 2012, 2014, 2018, 2019, and 2021.
Before his move to Manchester, Aguero won the 2010 UEFA Europa League title with Atletico Madrid.
